In this post, we’ll go over some easy DIY homemade instruments that will have your little one making music in no time. Ready? Let’s go!

Shaker Eggs
A classic for a reason! Shaker eggs are one of the easiest DIY instruments to make, and they’re a fantastic way to introduce rhythm to young musicians.
What You’ll Need:
1. plastic easter eggs
2. dry rice, beans, or lentils
3. tape or glue
How to Make It:
Fill the plastic egg with a small amount of rice or beans, then seal it shut with strong tape or glue. Shake away! Try using different fillers to experiment with different sounds.
Rubber Band Guitar
A rubber band guitar is fun and simple way to explore string instruments! Plus, it is so much to make! Since this instrument is made of cardboard, it is a great craft to get visually creative with!
What You’ll Need:
1. an empty tissue box or small shoebox
2. rubber bands of different sizes
3. a ruler or cardboard tube
How to Make It:
Stretch the rubber bands around the box to act as strings. Slide the ruler or tube under them to create tension. Pluck away and hear the different pitches each band makes!
Paper Plate Tambourine
A paper plate tambourine is great for little hands and perfect for keeping the beat! This craft is an amazing way to introduce rhythm to a young musician!
What You’ll Need:
1. two paper plates
2. jingle bells or bottle caps
3. hole punch and string (or glue/stapler)
How to Make It:
Punch holes around the edges of both plates. Thread string through the holes, attaching jingle bells as you go. Alternatively, glue bottle caps around the edge for a homemade jingling sound. Shake and tap to create your rhythm!
Straw Pan Flute
A straw pan flute is a simple way to introduce pitch and breath control!
What You’ll Need
1. straws
2. tape
3. scissors
How to Make It:
Cut straws into different lengths, then line them up from shortest to longest. Tape them together side by side. Blow across the tops to hear different pitches! Try adjusting the lengths to change the sounds.

What You’ll Need:
1. an empty tin can (smooth edges)
2. a balloon or fabric
3. a rubber band
4. chopsticks or pencils (for drumsticks)
How to Make It:
Stretch a balloon or a piece of fabric over the top of the can and secure it with a rubber band. Tap with your hands or use pencils as drumsticks for a mini drum session!
