How Do Online Lessons Work?

Can You REALLY Learn Through Online Lessons?

Some students and parents are apprehensive at first about our online music lessons. But once they get a taste of our awesome online music teachers, and fun lesson platform, they LOVE it!  Our school uses Zoom to connect our students and teachers, a great program with clear video and audio, minimal sound delay and fantastic educational features such as a virtual white board and the ability to annotate PDF documents such as sheet music! Thanks to this, you don’t need any special tools or audio equipment to participate, just a device with a webcam and your instrument! It’s a great way to enjoy the human connection and all the benefits of our music lessons while you’re away so you can enjoy the experience of our music lessons from the convenience of your own home!

How Are Online Lessons Different?

Quite obviously, the biggest difference between physical and virtual classrooms is of course the lack of the 3rd dimension. This can take some time to adapt to, especially for physical instruments like guitar and piano. With this being said, online lessons and virtual communication in general have improved dramatically within the last few years.

Are Online Lessons Good For Kids?

Perhaps the most common concern regarding online lessons is wondering how well young students will be able to focus without the teacher being physically in the room to direct their attention. The truthful answer is that it can at times be challenging, most often for the first few lessons. This is simply due to the change of environment, which requires an adjustment period to understand how to communicate and connect with others via this new medium.

For this reason, if the student is under the age of 8 we recommend that a parent stays in the room for the first class or two to provide a tangible sense of authority. After the first couple meetings most students adapt, and just like regular class parents do not have (but are always welcome) to be present.

I'm Worried My Child Won't Pay Attention

It makes total sense to question if young children will be able to pay attention using devices that are often seen as distractions rather than educational tools. However, it is the opposite that is true!

Technology is being brought into schools more and more as we edge towards the future, and nearly all of our young students have had experience with using computers, tablets and phones. You’d be surprised how tech savvy they are, some are even teaching our 20-something teachers a thing or two!

Since these devices are associated with fun and entertainment for children, it makes learning feel like a game rather than work. In fact, according to renowned educators implementing technology increases learning retention and helps students receive information in a more individualized manner.

More, Important Benefits Of Online Lessons

Adapting to these new tools, our teachers have found that by mixing traditional lesson practices, such as playing through a piece and working out any trouble parts, with new virtual inspired methods such as note reading on the “whiteboard”, students remain captivated and engaged for the entire lesson.

Another example of positive adaptation is the renewed ability to focus on using our ears as the main method of learning rather than our eyes. Though the effects of this type of training may take a longer time to show their benefit, it is by far the most important part of musicianship. Learning to use your physical and inner ear eventually allows a musician to pick up songs by hitting the play button and listening, providing higher confidence and self-sufficiency as a performer.

Though these virtual methods may be different than the ones used in the classroom, the underlying ideology is the same; by continually changing the angle and stimulus, students (and human beings in general) are able to study for longer periods of time without the need for a break.

Furthermore, for certain students who have a more tactile learning style our teachers have implemented activities that involve movement, such as call and response clapping and vocalizing solfege exercises with specific hand signs for each note.

How Should We Set Up For Online Lessons?

We recommend that the area where lessons take place is cleared of non-musical distractions. Most students tend to focus better in a common living room rather than their private space, as they are less likely to pick up a toy or feel the urge to lay down. It makes total sense to question if young children will be able to pay attention using devices that are often seen as distractions rather than educational tools. However, it is the opposite that is true!
