What’s better? Having in-home or in school lessons?

By far, the two most popular ways to take music lessons are by enrolling in a school or having a teacher come to your home. Since they both have their own pros and cons, let’s compare them to see which is the right choice for you!

The biggest advantage of in-home lessons is the convenience. You get to stay in the comfort of your own place and never have to worry about being late. However, there is one major drawback to this perk of convenience, and that is that it is much easier to become distracted at home. This is especially true for young children, who, due to the comfortability of the space tend to have a more difficult time settling in and focusing. Even as adults, there’s a reason why many of us prefer to do our emailing and other work from cafes instead of the living room!

In-home lessons are also often taught by teachers new to the field. Due to their lack of experience, they may find it hard to gain employment at a school and thus begin in-home lessons to develop their skills. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it is something to keep in mind, as it takes time to fully understand how to teach in an effective manner for all age groups, personality types, and goals.

In school lessons require some additional time spent commuting, but there are many advantages to enjoying lessons in an academy. Firstly, there is the massive benefit of having a great environment and as well as community to learn in and from. At Toronto Arts Academy we have professional grade equipment in each classroom, whether that be drum kits, pianos, guitars, or microphones for singers. We also hold group classes multiple times a week, giving students the opportunity to meet, play, and learn with and from each other.

Another benefit to in-school learning is the choice and availability of teachers and resources. At Toronto Arts Academy we pride ourselves on our ability to pair students with the right teachers. Goals, musical style, and personality are all a part of making sure the fit is right, and with over 20 in-house stellar teachers it makes it in an easy task!

Each student enrolled with us also gets to enjoy our musical ladder system, which rewards student achievement with wristbands and trophies. As well, each vocal student gains access to our Singer’s Edge Program, an elite vocal training program for popular singing.

Even though the winter is nearly upon us and heading out the door can feel undesirable, we believe the in-school advantages speak for themselves. Hope to see you soon! Stay warm out there!
